Adding the Time element to TerraExplorer

by Arik Katz 14. May 2009 05:42

Our latest release of TerraExplorer 5.1.2 introduced new support for the Time element. This feature allows you to define the life span of each object in the project by setting its start and end date and time. An object is only visible when the current project time is within this range. The current date and time can be modified through the new Date and Time slider displayed on the 3D window.

There are two ways to add time elements to objects. You can import KML or KMZ files that already contain the TimeSpan or TimeStamp tags. Or you can use the TerraExplorer Time Stamp tool to define start and end dates and times for selected objects or groups.

How to enhance your project using the Time element

The time element can be used to display:.

  • Object movement – place the same object in different locations, each with a different time tag. This is very effective for displaying the recorded route of a vehicle without using the API.
  • Object transformation – add the same object with certain variations in size, position, or other visual parameters, in the same location, each with a different time tag.
  • Historical versions of raster maps - add large imagery layers of the same area, each with a different time tag.

Controlling the Time element using the API

TerraExplorer provides full control over your objects’ start and end time tags, the Date and Time slider range and the current project time. If your 3D application is linked to a live feed of objects and events, you can automatically set the time tags of each object according to its real time appearance. You can later replay the events by setting the current project date and time to the time of the recording. You can even record your camera position, using the Route feature and synchronize between the view and the object’s appearances.
